We're sorry to hear that you are displeased with Map My Family Tree. You have addressed a couple issues here and I will do my best to help with both.

1. Map My Family Tree is not able to open .ftm files directly created by the latest versions of Family Tree Maker (2008 through to 2012). It is only able to open the older .ftw files created by the early versions. Unfortunately, there have been so many extensive changes made to the Family Tree Maker format that we are unable to keep some of our products fully compatible.

The only way you will still be able to open your files with MMFT is to export your Family Tree Maker file to a gedcom. This can be done within Family Tree Maker. This sounds far more intimidating than it really is.

2. It sounds like you may not have the latest version. We have made available a direct download link for Map My Family Tree.

Unfortunately, the automatic updater still will not work properly, even with the latest version. This is due to the changes made to the latest operating systems. Google Maps and Google Earth should work fine. We are sorry for any inconvenience.
