1. Setup does not run.
2. Setup won't continue without a company name.
3. SAR Patriot Index: Installs OK, but crashes when first run.
4. SSDI - No Matches Found - What am I doing wrong?

1. Setup does not run.

a. The user is not an administrator. If you do not have installation privileges, then XP will stop the installation before it can begin. Please be sure you are the administrator.

b. Antivirus software is running. Sometimes the anti-virus software must be disabled before you begin to install the software. Typically, if the this is the cause, the installation does not start up, or does so and then stops for no apparent reason.

c. There is more than one installation running at the same time, and each instance is interefering with the other(s).

2. Setup won't continue without a company name.

The Customer Information page of the SSDI CD won't let you continue with setup without entering a company name.

When you come to the Customer Information page, during the setup process, all you need to do is enter one character (ie: letter, number, etc.) in the Company Name field. You will then be able to select Next and continue on.

3. SAR Patriot Index: Installs OK, but crashes when first run.

Problem: Program locks up when first launched. It appears to be doing a system scan when this occurs. This happens on XP systems, especially new ones.

Cause: The problem sometimes occurs when SAR Patriot Index is first run. The program is scanning for WordPad, which is used as the default word processor for the register and ahnentafel (book) reports.

The program is not looking for it in the correct folder, as this location has changed from previous operating systems. It occurs most often on systems which never held an earlier operating system. As a result, the program aborts.

Solution: There is a work around solution which will resolve the problem.

Please try the following:

a. Search your computer for Wordpad.exe*. Copy this file. (Click once on this file to select it, then click Edit, Copy)
b. In My Computer, browse to this folder under C:\Program Files\Accessories
(If you do not find an Accessories folder in Program Files, please make one.)
c. Paste the Wordpad file into the Accessories folder.
d. Try your SAR Patriot Index program again.

This will solve the problem.

4. SSDI - No Matches Found - What am I doing wrong?

The datafile from the SSA Death Master File does not contain two given names for a person. In the SSDI, entering two will cause an error of "No Matches Found."

Enter a Last Name and ONE given name only, usually the first given name.

TIP: Try several variations of the given names. ie William, Bill, Will. Sometimes a person's second given name will be in the file instead. Also, try the wildcard searches.

From the SSDI Help:

Last Name (mandatory) up to 12 characters (maximum available from SSA Death Master File). Wildcard search is available.

First Name (mandatory) up to 10 characters (maximum available from SSA Death Master File) in some instances only the person's initial is on file i.e. 'J' instead of 'John'. Wildcard search is available.
